EMF Protection and Shielding

Why EMF Protection and Shielding?

In recent years the public discussion and demand for EMF shielding and protection have grown significantly. It’s no secret that our levels of exposure to harmful man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs)are at an all-time high. As a result, studies are indicating the correlation between the unprecedented levels of exposure we’re experiencing and the growing number of negative health repercussions.

Symptoms characterized as Electro-hyper-sensitivity (EHS) are being reported more frequently, especially in urban settings. Due to the dangers and long-term health effects associated, the need for EMF shielding and protection cannot be ignored. But, simply put – understanding the importance and taking serious action towards EMF shielding and protection are two different things – the latter can be very confusing and daunting.

Different Field Types Require Different Protective Shielding

EMF shielding is a general term that encompasses a wide range of interpretations, mainly because there are many different types of EMF (electric and magnetic fields, RF electromagnetic fields, different frequencies, different sources). For this reason the techniques and materials for shielding and mitigation vary depending on the EM field type.

Common EMF Types, Protection Techniques, and Shielding Options

Magnetic

Magnetic fields arise from the motion of electric charges. The strength of the magnetic field is most commonly measured in Tesla or Gauss. Magnetic fields exist as soon as a device is switched on and current flows. The field strength weakens with distance from the source.

Tip: The best protection against magnetic EMF’s is keeping distance, though, MU metal or a product called G-Iron can also be utilized as a shielding measure.

Electric

Electric fields come from voltage. The strength of an electric field is measured in Volts per meter (V/m). Electric fields can be present even when a device is switched off. The higher the voltage the stronger the field produced. Shielding for electric fields has to be grounded.

Tip: Be very careful with grounding and ensure you have a building biologist inspect how clean your ground in your home is before you connect shielding to it.

Dirty Electricity/Microsurge pollution

The term dirty electricity refers to the EM field flowing along a conductor that deviates from a pure 50/60 Hz sine wave and has both harmonic and transient properties. Also known as high-frequency voltage transients (HFVT).

Tip: The best method to protect and mitigate the effects of dirty electricity is filtration. In addition, utilizing shielding that is grounded. (See above warning.)

RF/High Frequency

Radio Frequency fields (RF) are high-frequency EM fields that range between 100kHz to 300 GHz. Key sources of RF fields include mobile phones, wireless telecommunications networks (5G), and broadcasting transmission antennas. In RF EMR, as the frequency is higher it is easier to block the EMF/EMR.

Tip: The lead protection measure for RF is to block/reflect it away with reflective EMF shielding materials like foils, metals, fabrics, paints, filters. The most impactful method of blocking is within a fully enclosed connected cage. Ie. a Faraday Cage.
